Economic and financial research is done by the Provincial Treasury to be used a planning tool for government.

Although the research is primarily done to guide government in its planning, it is also a valuable source of information for the private sector.

A brief summary of the most prominent research done by the Provincial Treasury:

  • Municipal Economic Review and Outlook - The Municipal Economic Review and Outlook (MERO) is an annual research publication produced by the Provincial Treasury of the Western Cape Government. The first edition of the MERO was published in 2012. It is aimed at informing policymakers at municipalities on key economic issues that affect policy, planning and budgeting. The annual Western Cape Municipal Economic Review and Outlook is a key source of economic intelligence empowering political and administrative leadership in their decision making processes. The MERO further disaggregates key socioeconomic trends to a sub-district municipal level.
  • Provincial Economic Review and Outlook - The principle of evidence-based practices is endorsed by the Western Cape Government and as such the objectives, strategies and interventions adopted by this Government are embedded in the research. The annual Western Cape Provincial Economic Review and Outlook (PERO) is a key sources of economic intelligence empowering political and administrative leadership in their decision making processes.
  • Socio Economic Profiles - Regional profiles provide the Western Cape municipalities with data and information which may assist in planning, budgeting and the prioritization of municipal services. It is acknowledged that municipalities across the Western Cape have different capacities and therefore will use the information in this publication to suit their own needs.
