The Provincial Sustainable Transport Programme’s (PSTP) Bicycle Distribution Programme, distributed 20 bicycles to learners at Luckhoff Secondary in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch on 25 August. In addition to the bicycles, each recipient received a full safety and repair kit with basic tools, as well as training on safe road practices.

The PSTP was initiated by the Department of Transport and Public Works to support the development and implementation of sustainable transport systems in the Western Cape. The PSTP recognises that Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) is the most accessible mobility option, especially for rural communities.

The PSTP also assists municipalities to plan infrastructure improvements such as sidewalks, bicycle lanes, traffic calming and safe crossings to better protect vulnerable road users. Stellenbosch Municipality is one of the PSTP priority municipalities and DTPW continues to support all elements of NMT development within the municipality, and especially bicycle mobility.
