From 13 to 20 May 2022, road safety officers of the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and school learners will participate in pickets in support of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week campaign to reduce speed limits near schools to 30km/h.

“DTPW Road Safety Management is advocating for the reduction of speed around schools from 60km/h to 30km/h because learners are the most vulnerable road user group. Vehicles speeding around schools are putting their lives in danger”, said Nokuzola Letselebe, Assistant Director: Road Safety Management.

On Monday, 17 May, learners from Rosewood Primary School and road safety officers picketed at the corner of Redberry Street and Bonteheuwel Ave in Bonteheuwel.

Last week picketing took place at Lwandle where learners from Christmas Tinto Primary, Solomon Qatyane Primary and Simanyane High School participated.

Picketing to support the UN Road Safety Week campaign will be taking place at Mitchells Plain, eMbekweni, Citrusdal, Ashton and Swellendam.

Global research shows 30 km/h speed limits where people walk, live and play can help to make streets safe, healthy and more liveable.
