The Department of Infrastructure completed preventative maintenance at Cecil Road Primary School in Salt River on 12 June 2023. This renovation forms part of the Department’s Preventative Maintenance Programme which focuses on proactive and reactive maintenance of Western Cape schools, including electrical fittings, roofing and plumbing.

Renovations include:
  • Replacing floor tiling and tile skirting in toilets;
  • Repairing cracks in ceilings and repainting them;
  • Fitting new indicator bolts on toilet cubicle doors;
  • Repainting toilet cubicle partitions;
  • Replacing missing toilet seat covers;
  • Replacing gutters;
  • Replacing downpipes;
  • Replacing roof sheeting;
  • Replacing water-damaged ceiling boards;
  • Replacing missing windowpanes; and
  • Servicing timber sash windows.

By keeping provincial school infrastructure in a good state of repair, the Preventative Maintenance Programme aims to increase the life of building components and improve the physical appearance of schools.

Cecil Road Primary was established in 1937, and forms part of the Declared “Salt River Heritage Protection Overlay Zone (HPOZ)”, which was legally constituted in 1998. The Department prioritised preserving the cultural heritage of the site by ensuring its maintenance work did not disrupt the social fabric or compromise the heritage significance of the school.

Principal Shahid Mathews expressed his gratitude for the newly renovated facilities.

“All role-players had the best interest of the school at heart and worked well together to ensure the successful completion of the project. Thank you to the quality assurance team for ensuring that all work is carried out to acceptable standards’, said Mathews.

“Our school community welcomes this renovation and I wish to give all role-players who worked so tirelessly on this project the assurance that the school building will be looked after.”
