Tuesday, 10 August was the official opening of the newly renovated paediatric oncology ward at Tygerberg Children's Hospital, situated in Tygerberg Hospital.
The new oncology ward was transformed into a child-friendly unit. Parents that stay with their children during treatment, now have friendly spaces to provide emotional support and care to their children during difficult cancer treatment.
Children diagnosed with cancer have an eighty percent (80%) chance of being cured, but it is essential that the child be treated in a holistic manner, including creating a safe and beautiful environment. This was made possible through the generous support, especially of Dell, who provided majority of the funding for upgrade of the unit.
Other contributors include the parent support organisation for families with a cancer child patient, Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC) and Kanya, who assist and encourage communities to help themselves. Anyone interested in donating for the renovation of the Tygerberg Children's Hospital can contact the Tygerberg Children's Hospital Trust fund procurement officer, Malcolm Kling at 021 938 9583.
