Health Facilities update following heavy overnight rain in Western Cape

Healthcare facilities have been affected by heavy rain and strong winds overnight in the province. Mop-up operations have since commenced at various facilities this morning, 14 June 2022, to ensure that services resume as soon as possible.

Some facilities have been closed temporarily and patients have been referred to their nearest clinic. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) have been alerted and are supporting facility-based teams this morning.

We appeal for patience as safety issues may impact our operations today and urge members of the public to follow advice from local authorities.  


Healthcare teams have shared the reports below on the facilities affected:

Durbanville CDC: The facility was temporarily closed this morning following a power outage. Power has since been restored to the facility (as of 08:20 am) and services have resumed.

Parow CDC: The community day centre briefly offered a limited service this morning. Healthcare workers issued medication parcels to community members. The facility has been closed for further assessment. Residents who require emergency care have been referred to Elsies River Community Health Centre (CHC).

Bishop Lavis CDC: The Bishop Lavis CDC has been closed due to flooding in the area. Healthcare workers could not access the facility this morning as roads were flooded. The facility has been closed until mop-up operations are complete to protect patients and staff. Residents who require emergency care have been referred to Elsies River CHC.

Mitchells Plain Hospital: The Mitchells Plain Hospital is fully operational. The staff tearoom and human resources department have been affected by heavy rain. However, services have not been disrupted. Clean-up operations have resumed.

Mitchells Plain CHC: The facility has reported minor leaks, but services have not been affected. Clean-up operations are underway.

Heideveld CDC and Emergency Centre: The Heideveld Emergency parking area is flooded. Mop-up operations are underway. Healthcare services have not been affected at the CDC and Emergency Centre.

Hanover Park CHC: Operations have not been affected at the Hanover Park CHC. Teams have reported minor leaks at the facility and clean-up teams have been alerted. 

Gugulethu CDC: The trauma unit at the facility has reported a minor water leak, however, services are continuing this morning. Mop-up operations are underway.

Maitland CDC: The doctor’s room and storeroom has been affected. Despite this, services are continuing at the facility this morning.

Grassy Park CDC:  The facility has experienced localized flooding. Services are continuing this morning, however, lighting in the waiting room has been affected. Mop-up teams have been alerted and are supporting healthcare workers at the facility.

Gustrouw CDC: The COVID-19 testing area has been temporarily closed due to water leaks. Community members who require COVID-19 testing will be moved to another room at the facility.

Michael Mapongwana CDC: Patients and staff are safe this morning despite minor leaks reported in one part of the facility. Operations are continuing as normal and clean-up teams have been alerted.

Stellenbosch Hospital (Cape Winelands District): Services have not been disrupted at the facility this morning. The facility has reported a minor water leak in one area and clean-up teams have been alerted.

Nomzamo CDC: The road leading to the entrance of the facility is flooded. Healthcare services have not been disrupted. Healthcare teams have cleared the area in front of the facility to protect patients.

Nieuwedrift Clinic: Teams have reported a minor water leak following heavy rain, but services are fully operational this morning.

Patriot Plein Clinic: The clinic has experienced water leaks in its storeroom and lighting in the waiting areas have been affected. Services continue and mop-up operations are underway.

TC Newman CDC: Water leaks have been reported in parts of the facility, but services are continuing with mop-up operations underway.

Windmeul Clinic: Services have not been disrupted at the facility. Health teams are working with local authorities to monitor low-hanging branches from trees outside the facility following heavy rain. 


The Department is monitoring the situation and we’re making every effort to ensure that our healthcare facilities are safe in order to provide much-needed services to our communities.  We want to provide for the safety and welfare of both the public and our healthcare teams.
