Restriction and Prohibition of Organic Waste to Landfill Workshop

19 November 2019

You are invited to participate in the Restriction and Prohibition of Organic Waste to Landfill in the Western Cape Workshop

The Department of Environmental Affairs & Development Planning (DEA&DP) has taken a policy decision to institute a 50% restriction on organic waste being disposed to landfill by 2022 and a full prohibition of organic waste disposed to landfill by 2027.

Organic waste which forms approximately 30% of the waste stream in the Western Cape is a resource that has intrinsic economic value if separated properly and used either for compost, nutrient extraction or as an energy source. Diverting organic waste from our landfill sites will save landfill airspace and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

To address the restriction and prohibition and to facilitate opportunities to beneficiate organic waste in the West Coast district the DEA&DP is inviting all organic waste generators (municipalities, abattoirs, retailers, restaurants etc.) and treaters of organic waste (i.e. those composting, using anaerobic digesters or other treatment technologies etc.) to find a regional solution for organic waste.
