Our heroes wear green!

Global Recycling Day shines the spotlight on our #RecyclingHeroes

Each year on 18 March, Global Recycling Day takes place with the aim of encouraging people across the globe to see waste as an opportunity.

Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. – Global Recycling Day Website.

This year’s theme focuses on those individuals that take the time to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our Department has a team of these heroes whose job it is to educate and implement waste minimisation policies and practices across the province.

Meet Belinda Langenhoven and Robyn Britten who work tirelessly in helping our Department achieve its mandate by working closely with municipalities, industry and the community to promote waste minimisation through awareness campaigns and capacity building.

“My passion is using waste as a resource to help transform the livelihoods of the poor and marginalized while we protect our planet and its resources. Recycling can create so many possibilities for communities. With the right mindset, it can bring dignity and pride into the lives of people and give them hope.”
