World’s Most Beautiful Marathon in Cape Town
Thousands of local and international competitors will again pull out their running shoes and push their bodies to the limit over the Easter weekend in the various races associated with the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.
The 56 km ultra-marathon and 21 km half-marathon take place on Easter Saturday, 19 April 2014. Other runs will take place on Good Friday, 18 April near the University of Cape Town (UCT) and in the city centre.
The Western Cape Government (WCG) is contributing financially towards the staging of what is regarded to be the world’s most beautiful marathon. The WCG will be hosting a team building refreshment station at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens Top Gate, which will encourage all runners to the finish line. If you would like to represent WCG at the refreshment station and participate in this team building opportunity, please contact email@example.com.
Inaugurated in 1970, the event has become South Africa’s biggest and most popular road race. About 11 000 runners will take part in this year’s ultra-marathon and 16 000 will participate in the half-marathon.
On 18 April, there will be two trail runs (10 km and 22 km) on the slopes and forests near UCT. These offer steep ascents and descents to keen runners of all levels. A fun run will take place on the UCT rugby field and the International Friendship Run will take place in the city centre for those who want to get into the spirit of things without too much exertion. This major event will also play host to an annual expo on hot running trends, apparel and supplements as well as the latest news on outdoor adventure sports, tours and much more.
If you’re wanting to support loved ones and friends running the ultra-marathon some of the best spots to cheer them on are:
- Main Road in Lakeside;
- Kommetjie Road in Fish Hoek;
- Silvermine Road intersection at Ou Kaapse Weg;
- Noordhoek Village at the start of Chapman’s Peak;
- Constantia Nek (where Nedbank hosts the Green Mile with five entertainment hotspots);
- Cecelia Forest along Rhodes Drive;
- Kirstenbosch Gardens; and
- Union Avenue towards UCT.
Please note that entries for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon are now closed.
