Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has extended her sincere gratitude to the dedicated officers of the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) for their ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and help build safer communities across the province.

As the Western Cape Government & City of Cape Town’s partnership to tackle violent crime and murder, LEAP has proven highly effective through its strategic deployment in identified crime hotspots. LEAP officers also form part of the multi-disciplinary team supporting Operation Shanela 2, which launched in Cape Town last week. As a vital force multiplier to the South African Police Service (SAPS), LEAP’s role is central to ongoing efforts to curb crime.

The recent confiscation of illegal firearms, a key driver of murder and violent crime, has been particularly encouraging. Following the tragic mass shooting in Gugulethu, LEAP officers successfully recovered an assault rifle near the scene. These actions directly contribute to the measurable decline in murder rates across the Western Cape.

Minister Marais said“I commend the professionalism, bravery, and dedication shown by our LEAP officers. Their tireless work on the frontlines is saving lives and bringing hope to communities that have suffered under the weight of gang violence and lawlessness. Each illegal firearm removed from our streets is a step toward a safer province.”

The Western Cape Government remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting SAPS, as the lead crime-fighting agency, in their work against violent crime and murder.
