YeBoneers lead the change: Youth Month activations showcase youth in action

As we wrap up Youth Month, we reflect on a time dedicated to honouring the bravery and vision of the 1976 generation and celebrating the power, potential, and leadership of today’s youth. It’s a month that calls for both remembrance and action — and this June, YearBeyond answered that call with a vibrant and impactful wave of Youth Month Activations across the Western Cape.

At the heart of these activations were the YeBoneers — young people between 18 and 25 who serve in schools and communities through the YearBeyond programme. This June, they went beyond their day-to-day youth service roles to lead activations that tackled real-world issues and gave voice to the challenges and aspirations of their peers.

From youth debates, creative talent showcases, school engagement sessions, and wellbeing workshops to community clean-ups, food drives, and dialogues with local leaders, the activations were a wonderful showcase of young people’s agency and initiative - core competencies developed on the YeBo journey. The activities were developed by the youth themselves, drawing on their lived experiences and guided by a strong desire to uplift and inspire others.

The activations also raised awareness around key issues such as youth unemployment, education inequality, substance abuse, mental health, and gender-based violence.

Wayde Groep from YearBeyond said, “Our Youth Month Activations are rooted in the belief that young people are not just leaders of tomorrow — they are changemakers today. When we create opportunities for youth to serve, reflect, and lead, we see them rise beyond expectation and build powerful connections in their communities.”

These activations are not standalone events — they form part of YearBeyond’s broader mission to develop engaged, skilled, and socially conscious young leaders. Through service, leadership, and community action, YeBoneers are demonstrating that when given opportunity and support, youth don’t just participate — they drive change.

Together, we are building a future where young people lead with purpose, speak with conviction, and serve with heart — in Youth Month, and every month thereafter.
