Worcester Museum a hive of activity for International Museum Day

26 May 2017

International Museum Day was commemorated across the world on 18 May with the theme of “Saying the unspeakable in museums”.

The team at Worcester Museum went out of their way to make it a memorable occasion by hosting a variety of activities for museum visitors on 20 May 2017.

According to Ellen Strauss, Public Programme Manager, the programme aimed to enhance solidarity and unity amongst the community and improve access to the Museum.

The public was excited to partake in the activities which included the baking of bread, milk tart and lemon meringue, as well as making butter and cottage cheese. There were also demonstrations of ancient ways of paper making, making ointment by using herbs, threshing of wheat, brick making and mattress stuffing.

To coincide with International Museum Day, the museum also hosted an art and craft exhibition of the Zwelenthemba Art School as well as a travelling exhibition “Our Karoo Garden Food” curated by the Department’s Museum Service unit.

Drum majorettes from the local Unique Roses group entertained the visitors with their wonderful paces, while the Rocsa community group contributed to the atmosphere of excitement with their music, compelling young and old to start dancing! The highlight of the day was the tasting of the homemade breads and confectioneries, as well as a train and donkey cart ride sponsored by the Cape Winelands District Municipality.

Museums educate our youth and enable them to preserve their cultural heritage for future generations, BETTER TOGETHER.
