Update on roadworks between Bredasdorp and Stormsvlei
The Department of Transport and Public Works is making good progress with the resealing of a 49 km stretch of road on the R317 between Bredasdorp and Stormsvlei. This R73 million project started in November 2015 and is scheduled for completion early in 2017.
Work includes surface patching, base repairs and edge break repairs to the road. Maintenance is being performed on the Kars River and Sout River bridges, and a number of stormwater structures will be demolished and replaced with standard concrete inlet and outlet structures.
Half-width construction is being undertaken with a stop/ go sign regulating traffic flow along 4 km operating sections during the day, and lights regulating the flow of traffic at night.
Contract expenditure on targeted enterprises so far is R2.8 million. A total of 6 326 person-days of work have been created so far for people from the Overberg District Municipality, more than half the 12 000 person-day target.
The Department is aware that roadworks frustrate motorists, but takes all possible steps to minimise inconvenience. Once the project is completed, the 447 vehicles using this road every day will greatly benefit from improved travelling conditions.
