Sports fixtures to continue in Vredenburg after complex gets new borehole

The Vredenburg Sports Grounds will be unaffected by any continuation of the Western Cape drought following the opening of a new borehole at the facility on Wednesday.

Vredenburg and other towns in the Saldanha Bay Municipality were some of the hardest hit by the ongoing drought.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation and DCAS Minister, Anroux Marais, were present at the opening of the new borehole.

“This is a fantastic day because you are the first municipality to actually have a completed borehole. This was one of the issues that the standing committee raised with minister Anroux Marais about a year and a half ago, when the drought was at its height, and each department was asked how we were going to respond to it,” Dr Bouah said at the opening.

“During our discussion with Minister Marais, we were advised to make funding available to one municipality in each district. Sports fixtures must continue even if we are experiencing a drought and have to limit events.”

The borehole, including pumps and four large tanks, were funded by DCAS (R120 000) and Saldanha District Municipality (R89 000).

On 9 April Minister Marais also announced the construction of a borehole to serve a sports facility in Napier in the Overberg District Municipality.
