Software Freedom Day

The Western Cape Province will join the rest of the world in celebrating Software Freedom Day (SFD) on the 10th of September. This global event is aimed at highlighting the virtues and availability of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and how such software can help uplift communities.

The Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC), through its Centre for e-Innovation (CeI), has been involved in FOSS and will be present in the celebration of the day by demonstrating development with MONO and highlighting some key government projects, partnerships and strategies.

The one-day event will host install-fests and display stands where members of the public can bring their PCs or laptops FOSS installations and demonstration.

There will also be demonstrations on the vital role FOSS plays in schools, tertiary institutions and government.

Citizens of the Western Cape should leave the event with an empowered sense of how FOSS can build and grow the information society.

Where and When

Software Freedom Day will be celebrated on the 10th September 2005 at Century City (Located near the Stuttafords in the upper court, Canal Walk).

The campaign will be concurrently hosted in other location within South Africa:

  1. Johannesburg, The Zone in Rosebank
    The area is close to YFM and in between the Ster Kinekor escalators on one side and Seatle Coffee on the other. CD Warehouse, Fascination Books, Aca Joe, Urban Basics and Vertigo Clothing area.
  2. Durban, Gateway Theatre of Shopping
    In Carnaby Court, opposite Hugo Boss under staircase
  3. Soweto, The Funda Centre carpark (outdoor event)
  4. In Diepkloof, next to Lesedi Hospital, on Old Potsch Road

Entrance is free, voluntary participation encourage.
