Promoting Softball at the Heritage Day Softball Festival

25 September 2014

Schools from across the Overberg region were invited to celebrate Heritage Day by taking part in the Heritage Day Softball festival held in Caledon. The festival was organised to promote softball as a sport in the region, as well as the participation of girls in sport.

The 240 participants were exposed to the different skills used in playing softball, with activities in the form of modified matches such as softball, tag and dodgeball rounders. The activities gave the participants an opportunity to learn about the rules and terms used on the field in a fun and exciting way. The festival was organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Department of Education, Theewaterskloof Municipality,  Caledon South African Police Service and the Western Cape Softball Federation.

MOD (Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth) Softball Curriculum Advisor, Margi Hill said that approximately 240 school children participated in the event, and said: ‘Where some schools in the Overberg are not exposed to Softball, creating the festival is a safe place for children to celebrate Heritage Day and have fun while learning’. The participants were treated to an exhibition match between the Strandfontein Mets and the girls’ softball team from the Western Cape Sport School as a great ending to the day’s festivities.
