On behalf of the Western Cape Government I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Stellenbosch University Rector, Professor Russel Botman, who passed away earlier today.
We are deeply saddened by the untimely death of Professor Botman who was first appointed University Rector and Vice-Chancellor in 2007 by the Council of Stellenbosch University. Professior Botman was reappointed in 2012 to serve for another five year term. He first joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as Professor in the Department of Practical Theology and Missiology. In 2002 he was appointed Vice-Rector. Botman was an internationally-known theologian who has advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several topics. He also served as President of the South African Council of Churches.
Professor Botman will be remembered for his contribution not only to Stellenbosch University, but for enriching South Africa’s academic circles as a whole.
In my encounters with Professor Botman, I was always encouraged to see that South Africa had dedicated men and women committed to seeing our education centers constantly improved and developed.
Professor Botman has without a doubt enriched the lives of many South Africans and will be sorely missed.
Our prayers and thoughts are with the close relatives, family, friends and Stellenbosch University during this difficult time.
