Minister Simmers to empower Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain residents

16 November 2021

On Tuesday 16 November, the Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements will hand over 22 title deeds to residents in Khayelitsha, and 5 to residents from Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain. This will be followed by a sod turning ceremony at the Silvertown Emergency Housing Project.

Minister Simmers said: “I’m looking forward to both events, as they’re of significant importance to members of these two communities. The title deed handover presents us with another opportunity to ensure that more of our people become legal homeowners for the first time in their lives. This is a true form of empowerment, as ownership is an aspect that was denied in the past.

Second to this, the sod turning marks the beginning of renewal for the 342 households that lost their belongings in a devasting fire in October 2018 in the SST section, Silvertown Informal Settlement in Khayelitsha. Soon, these residents would be able to live in an improved, safer and dignified manner”.

The Western Cape government has set aside over R240 million budget towards this project which will benefit victims of natural disaster, elderly, disabled and vulnerable people from the Silvertown ST Area.
