Minister Fritz visits Ocean-View following gang-related shootings

26 February 2020

Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, visited the SAPS Ocean View station and the bereaved family of Emaan Solomons (8) who was killed whilst playing in her yard during an alleged gang-related shout out in Ocean View yesterday evening.

Emaan was rushed to False Bay hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds upon arrival. SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) and the Anti-Gang Unit were called to restore calm to the community following the shooting. It is further reported that a 31-year-old male was shot and killed in Andromeda Way, Ocean View.

Minister Fritz said, “Before arriving at the Solomons’ family household, the family received trauma debriefing. It is clear that the entire family are deeply devastated by the loss of Emaan, who was highly regarded by all. I have extended my deepest condolences to the family and offered support to them in their time of need.”

“Upon visiting the SAPS station, I received a call from the Provincial Commissioner, Yolisa Matakata, and I requested that the Anti-Gang Unit be continuously deployed in the area to ensure that gang-related violence is subdued, to which she graciously agreed. Going forward, I will convene a meeting with all safety stakeholders in the community, including Neighbourhood Watches, SAPS, Community Policing Forums and others to devise a safety plan with a practical implementation dashboard,” said Minister Fritz.

Minister Fritz said, “I urge anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to immediately come forward and report such to their local SAPS station or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111. As communities, we cannot allow gangs to plague and terrorise the innocent and vulnerable. We must take a stand and report known criminals.”
