Minister Carlisle Reacts to Minister Ndebele's Halting of Toll Road Projects

24 October 2011

Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape, said he supported National Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele's announcement that he had halted toll road projects in the Western Cape.

"If Minister Ndebele's intention constitutes the shifting of capital investment away from private transport to public transport, then he has my full support," he said.

"In other words, if we are going to spend our big money on commuter rail and road public transport and getting freight off the roads and onto rail, then this is a policy direction we can walk together."

"I would like to reiterate the position of the Western Cape Transport and Public Works Department - we must maintain what we have in the form of roads, while any other money we have must be put into public transport," said Minister Carlisle.
