Media Alert: Minister Winde Departs SA for a Trade and Investment Mission to Netherlands

3 June 2013

Today, 3 June 2013, Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, departs South Africa for a trade and investment mission to The Hague, Netherlands.

Minister Winde is travelling to the Netherlands at the invitation of CFO South Africa, a network of finance professionals, to attend a joint roundtable discussion on the changing role of CFOs and best practices in financial management.

"This event brings business and government together to look at what lessons the public and private sector can learn from one another, specifically with regard to good financial governance. In addition to speaking on how the Western Cape Government is pioneering new methods to achieve better audits across the board, I will also speak on growing the relationship between the Netherlands and the Western Cape in terms of trade and investment,” said Minister Winde.

Apart from participating in the CFO Day roundtable discussion on Wednesday, Minister Winde is set to deliver the keynote address at the Southern African - Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (SANEC) member function on Thursday.

Hosted at KPMG's global head offices in The Hague, Minister Winde's address will focus on increasing investment opportunities between the Western Cape and the Netherlands.

"The Netherlands is a major exporter of Western Cape wines, fresh and dried fruits. Local exports to Holland are valued at more than R4 billion per annum. Several leading Dutch companies have offices in the province and have invested R1.3 billion into the Western Cape. I will be looking at how we can build on these foundations and where we can forge links in new trade sectors," said Minister Winde.

Minister Winde will also meet with Dutch business and government representatives in the Western Cape's key growth sectors such as cycling tourism, wine, agri-processing, design and technology and innovation.

"Increased trade and investment is vital for growing the Western Cape economy and creating jobs. This, in turn, creates opportunities for our residents to live better lives,” said Minister Winde.
