Media Alert: Minister Grant to visit Winter school for Grade 12s

25 June 2013

Tomorrow, 26 June, Minister Grant will be visiting Esangweni Secondary in Khayelitsha where Grade 12 learners are participating in a Winter School programme in preparation for the 2013 National Senior Certificate Examinations.

Esangweni Secondary is one of the province’s 26 underperforming schools. The school achieved 48.6% in the 2012 NSC.

The winter schools programme therefore aims to help improve individual learner results in schools that are either underperforming or are struggling in certain subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Life Sciences, Accounting and Economics.

The WCED has initiated a number of Winter School programmes across the province benefitting learners from over 200 high schools.

Many of the programmes on offer are being taught by tutors selected by the WCED.

Tomorrow morning, Minister Grant will addressing the learners at Esangweni Secondary. Media will then be able to interview learners during their tea break period, which will follow.

The Minister will also explain to the press the various other interventions by the WCED to help improve learner results, specifically at underperforming schools.
