Media Alert: First Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid at Groote Schuur

On the 23rd of February 2011, an Ear Surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital will be implanting the first Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) at a state hospital in the Western Cape. The first recipients of the BAHA are two children with hearing loss who will benefit from these implants. The recipients of this life changing operation are Asiphe Ngamlana (aged 13 years) of Khayamandi in Stellenbosch and Kanya Mbaliswana (aged 13 years) of Khayelitsha. Both children have not had maximum benefit from a conventional hearing aid.

The clinical team and patients will be available for interviews and pictures, half an hour prior to the surgery.
