MEC Grant Attends the Launch of the Write Round SA Expedition

31 August 2009
This morning, MEC for Education in the Western Cape Donald Grant attended the launch of the Write Round SA Expedition at Heinz Park Primary School in Phillipi.

The Write round SA expedition focuses on the distribution of writing materials and lap desks to rural schools across South Africa.

Justin Brogan, the founder of Write Round SA, has packed his 4x4 Land Rover with large quantities of stationery such as pens, pencils, rulers, crayons, and pencil boxes, and will be driving along the inside edge of SA, starting and ending in Cape Town, delivering the stationary to needy schools along route.

Brogan will be visiting seven of the nine Provinces, and is expected to arrive back in Cape Town in mid October.

He has begun his journey at Heinz Park, where he handed a number of writing materials to the principal, Mr Molakeng, who indicated that he was most grateful to receive the gifts of pens, crayons and other writing materials.

MEC Grant extended his full support to the campaign, saying that the expedition fell in line with one of his key objectives - ensuring the development of our children's literacy skills.

"Literacy and numeracy are important foundation skills for a successful education; however, numerous studies over the years have shown that South African children are falling behind international standards in terms of literacy and numeracy," he said.

"Writing is essential to literacy, and underpins learning across all areas of the curriculum. The development of writing skills depends crucially on the quantity written. Therefore, we fully endorse Justin Brogan's endeavour to encourage our youth to develop their writing skills, thus improving their levels of literacy."

"I sincerely hope that all my colleagues in the other provinces support Justin on route, and that all stakeholders get involved, be it in moral support, or in the provision of stationary and general supplies," said Grant.

Brogan has indicated that donations in terms of diesel and stationary would be most welcome. He can be contacted on 082 4406767 or visit his website
