Library Week 2009 to be launched at Cloetesville Public Library

4 March 2009
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will on Friday, 06 March 2009 host the launch of the annual Library Week. The launch will be held at the Cloetesville Public Library in Stellenbosch.

Library Week is celebrated each year on the third week of March as part of the national drive to promote libraries, the services they provide, reading and the benefits of literacy. It will be held from 16-21 March 2009. It was first conceptualised in 1965 but was officially launched as Public Library Day in 1985.

This year's theme is "Race for knowledge @ your library" and "The race for knowledge continues @ your library." The campaign images depict the tortoise and the hare, the age-old story book characters.

The Library Week sets out to continue to promote and uplift communities through education, culture, recreation, literacy and free access to information. Public Libraries endeavour to provide safe public spaces for study and a recreational facility beneficial to positive social development, to counteract drug use and crime.

The Week also looks at contributing to economic growth by encouraging the youth to read, providing them with information resources at their disposal thus enabling them to get the necessary skills needed in the job market.

Date: Friday, 06 March 2009
Time: 10:00-12:00
Venue: Cloetesville Public Library, Stellenbosch
