Five Dead on Western Cape Roads

On 19 and 20 September, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks were held across the Western Cape which saw a total of 3 027 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total 1 342 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 18 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 1.29 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 6 961 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 523 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and seventy four (274) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 328 000.

The highest speeds recorded:

  • 186 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 112 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West area.

One Other Arrest

  • 1 x Reckless and Negligent Driving (Somerset West)

Five fatalities were reported this weekend:

  • Klapmuts – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Caledon – 1 x Driver and 2 x Passengers
  • Clanwilliam – 1 x Occupant
