Department to Host Sport Transformation Indaba

7 March 2014

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) will be hosting a Sport Transformation Indaba in Cape Town on Saturday, 8 March 2014.

Transformation forms an important part in the development of sport. The Transformation Charter for South African Sport defines transformation as a process of holistically changing the delivery of sport through the actions of individuals and organisations that together comprise the sport sector. The purpose is to ensure:

  • increased access to sport and recreation opportunities for all South Africans, including women, persons with disabilities, youth, children and the elderly;
  • that the socio-economic benefits of sport can be harnessed; and
  • that people’s constitutional rights are recognised.

Discussion is expected to revolve around the following topics:

  • How the National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP) is linked to transformation in the sector;
  • The status of transformation of sport in the Western Cape;
  • How the transformation system works and how to register a sport federation;
  • The role of school sport in the transformation of sport in the Western Cape; and
  • The role of high-performance focus areas in the transformation of sport.

Having mapped the transformation landscape and discussed the key issues, the Indaba is expected to map out a clear way forward on this important issue.
