The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) along with Minister Anroux Marais officially handed over R 2 095 000.00 of funding to 34 federations in the Eden District on 17 April 2018 at the Riversdale Civic Centre.
The money, divided among the Eden Sport Council and 34 sport federations, is given in an attempt to further enhance sporting activities within the district. Recipients of the funds include Eden Baseball, Eden Bowls, Eden Boxing, Eden Cycling, Eden Fencing, Eden Kickboxing, Eden Lifesaving, Eden Netball, Eden Sailing, Eden Table Tennis, Eden Tug of War, Southern Cape Golf (Women), Southern Cape Light Tackle Boat, Eden Aquatics, SWD Athletics, SWD Biathlon, Eden Chess, SWD Cricket Board, Southern Cape Golf Union, Southern Cape Hockey, SWD Majorettes Association, SWD Rugby, SWD Shore Angling, SWD Snooker, SWD Squash, Eden Modern Pentathlon, Eden Karate, Eden Tennis, Eden Judo, Eden Hunting Rifle Shooting, Eden Surfing, Eden Triathlon, Badminton and Eden Equestrian.
The Mayor of the Hessequa Municipality, Grant Riddles, welcomed guests to the cheque handover ceremony and thanked Minister Marais for the investment she is making within the region in terms of sport. “Sport plays a very important role in our lives, sport also has the ability to build and develop our community.” said Riddles.
During her keynote address, Minister Marais said: “Together we need to do the hard yards at grassroots level providing as much funding and support as possible. This is the only sustainable way to achieve transformation and development in sport. Thank you to all the representatives of the sport federations, for volunteering your time to ensure the success of sport in our province. “
The Chairperson of the Eden Sport Council, David Speelman, concluded the ceremony and thanked Minister Marais and DCAS for making it possible for federations to assist and grow local sport.
The next cheque handover is scheduled for 19 April 2018 in the Cape Winelands.
DCAS supports sporting federations with funding. The funds should be used to develop and grow local sporting talent in our communities. Let us continue to grow our sporting talent BETTER TOGETHER.
