Coronation Double Century contributing to economic development in the Overberg

26 November 2018

Over the weekend, hundreds of cyclists descended on Swellendam for the 26th Coronation Double Century.

The gruelling 202km race is one of the largest team trials in the world.

Minister of Economic Opportunities, Beverley Schäfer , who also completed the ride,  said: “The CDC is an important fixture in the annual cycling calendar, not just because of the teamwork and camaraderie, but because of the impact it has on tourism and the economy of the Overberg region.”

This year, 250 teams of between 6 and 12 riders took part in the race, among them the Breitling triathlon squad. The squad used their ride to raise funds to sponsor 500 bikes for local bike charity, Qhubeka. The team included Italian road cyclist Vincenzo Nibali, Swiss triathletes Ronnie Schildknecht and Daniele Ryf, German Olympic gold medallist Jan Frodeno and Australian Chris McCormack.

Schäfer said: “The Western Cape wants to position itself as a premier cycling destination in Africa as part of our Project Khulisa goals. Hosting events like the CDC helps to grow our economy through tourism and contributes to job creation. When we have all-star teams like the Breitling squad, it also helps to showcase our province to international visitors and markets. The presence of such exceptional athletes also helps to inspire young, local riders.”

In addition to cycling events, the Western Cape government is also developing a series of cycle routes aimed at tourists and leisure riders. The fourth, the Overberg Meander, will be launched in Swellendam on December 10th.

Schafer said: “The Overberg region is spectacularly beautiful with excellent cycling routes, as all of the CDC riders experienced this weekend. The Overberg Meander will take full advantage of this when it is launched next month.”
