Celebrate Your Freedom

On 27 April 1994, the first democratic and non-racial national election was held in the South Africa. This day is now celebrated annually as Freedom Day and reminds us of the countless sacrifices made by our countrymen and countrywomen who fought to make South Africa a free nation. For many, the events of this day will always live in their memories.

Freedom Day inspires a strong sense of patriotism and encourages us to celebrate the Bill of Rights, which guarantees our freedom.

For the past 20 years we have celebrated Freedom Day to observe the remarkable event this day bestows upon this country. The twentieth anniversary of our freedom and democracy will be marked under the theme “South Africa – A better place to live in”. This reflects a milestone in the country’s democracy and encourages us to unite in celebrating our democracy. These 20 years are of greater significance for South Africans to continue to build a society grounded on unity and freedom to protect our democracy.

Several events are planned across the country, with the main national event taking place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Sunday, 27 April 2014. President Jacob Zuma will present the National Orders awards at the conclusion of the event. These awards recognise those who have contributed to the advancement of the country.

Numerous events have been planned across the province. See a few of the events you can look out for:
