110% Green Celebrates First Anniversary

7 June 2013

In an aim to bring business and government closer to achieving a healthier environment for the future, the Western Cape Government launched its 110% Green initiative in June last year.

According to the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, the 110% Green initiative is a call for 110% commitment to connecting environmental preservation and economic growth. It is also a call for companies to have an impact of 10% or less on the environment.

The 110% Green initiative is a call to organisations to commit to the Green Economy, act on their commitment and make an impact.

The initiative aims to be a catalyst that puts the Western Cape well on the road to becoming Africa’s Green Economic Hub.  Now, a year later, the initiative boasts 80 flagship projects from across the Western Cape.

A flagship is an organisation, municipality, NGO or business that has made more than the usual commitment towards the Green Economy.

e-Khaya Shack Replacement is one such company. This shack replacement initiative is set to establish the e-Khaya Research and Training Centre by the end of 2013 and start training entrepreneurs in early 2014. These entrepreneurs will build their own small business enterprises during 2014, base themselves in the community and identify suitable client homeowners, who they will instruct in building their own e-khayas.

Other flagships include Ecozone Boland, which collects and safely disposes of e-waste, and the FindaLift lift club network.

At the 110% Green one-year anniversary event held on 4 June 2013 at the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading Project (VPUU) in Khayelitsha, Premier Zille welcomed 20 new flagship projects.

"Our vision is of a vibrant green economy in the Western Cape to drive growth and job creation and our aim is to be the Green Economic Hub, not just of South Africa, but indeed of Africa. We have chosen not to wait, but to start building a new future now – a future that is green and energy-efficient," Zille said.
