DCAS supports Cape Winelands Sport Organisations with R1,4m

15 April 2015

On Tuesday, 14 April 2015, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Theuns Botha handed over R1,4 million to the Cape Winelands District Interim Sport Council, previously known as Boland. This is part of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) annual funding plan to support sport and recreation in the Western Cape.

The grant includes support for 12 major events scheduled to take place during the course of the 2015/16 financial year. The council will also distribute funds to its 27 affiliated sport federations for major events, development, transformation, administration and capacity building.

The event was attended by representatives of various affiliated sport federations, as well as the Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District, Ald. Neels de Bruyn, Chief Director of DCAS Sport and Recreation, Adv. Lyndon Bouah and Member of Parliament Kobus Marais.

Sport and Recreation South Africa handed over equipment to five clubs in the Cape Winelands District to assist them to grow their sports, unearth new talent and become more competitive. These clubs are Paarl Chess Club, Sinako Boxing Club, All Stars Football Club, Genuine Connection Netball Club and Paarl East Cricket Club.

“We wish to extent our gratitude to Minister Botha, Adv. Bouah and the entire DCAS staff for their ongoing support to our district,” said Ald. de Bruyn in his welcoming speech.

“We know that there is still a lot to do for us to become an equal society, especially where sport and recreation is concerned”, said Botha. “This contribution is a step in the right direction for the different sport federations which form part of the Cape Winelands Sport Council.”

Two more district sport councils will receive funding from DCAS:

Through its partnerships with sport councils and sport federations, DCAS offers people of the Western Cape the opportunity to hone their sporting skills and grow their talent. Let us create an active and fit province BETTER TOGETHER.
