Minister condemns killing of CATA Chairperson

20 November 2019

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Bonginkosi Madikizela, has strongly condemned the callous murder of the chairman of the Bellville CATA Taxi Association.

The Minister conveyed his condolences to the family of Mr Tyhilile Elliot Mqhele who was gunned down in his car by unknown assailants early on Tuesday evening, shortly after leaving a meeting with members of his association in Bellville.

Minister Madikizela has requested the SAPS and Metro Police to have an increased level of visibility in the Bellville and Kraaifontein area from early on Wednesday morning to monitor the situation, which is understandably very tense.

The Minister has also requested that the leadership of the Western Cape branch of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) impress on their members to refrain from acts of retaliation and to call for calm among members on both sides of the historical dispute. The Minister said that all efforts must be made to avoid being dragged into a spiral of violence and revenge attacks.
