Overberg District Safety Plan festive season launch

7 December 2016

The festive season activities of the pilot Overberg District Safety Plan (DSP) will be announced in Caledon on 9 December 2016. The launch event will be followed by an integrated roadblock and various road safety awareness activities.

The DSP is an integrated enforcement, education and engineering plan which responds to all the elements that can contribute to road safety in the Caledon Traffic Centre operational area.

The pilot is supported by the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works, the Cape Agulhas, Theewaterskloof and Overstrand municipalities, and the South African Police Service Overberg Cluster. It aims to reduce overall fatalities by 33%, and child fatalities by 50%, by 2020.

A number of road safety and traffic law enforcement activities in the DSP commenced on 1 October 2016 and will run until 31 March next year. These will include the broadcasting of radio advertisements and activities linked with the monthly Safely Home calendar road safety themes.

Local media and interested news media stakeholders have been identified as key contributors to helping the plan become a success. This engagement is intended both to inform journalists about the road safety situation, and to provide an informal setting for them to get to know key people working on the plan.
