Glentana Road Upgrades Nearing Completion

18 June 2015

The rehabilitation and upgrades of the District Roads near the Glentana and Great-Brak River area in the Southern Cape are nearing completion. The project, valued at R104 million, started in October 2013 and is expected to be completed in September this year. Over 3 000 vehicles travel daily on these roads.

General Traffic Accommodation

Traffic accommodation will be by means of half width construction with a Stop/Go system during the day and a traffic light system at night.

Possible Delays

Motorists can expect a number of delays due to a number of road works in the area. These include:

  • Rehabilitation and widening of 7 km of the road.
  • Extensive pavement rehabilitation using soil reinforcement.
  • Upgrade from gravel to surfaced road.
  • Construction of sidewalks.
  • Extensive drainage structures.
  • Construction of two revetment walls.
  • Slope remediation at two locations.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Department of Transport and Public Works has created a significant amount of employment opportunities through the project. It is estimated that the upgrades will economically benefit the public up to R17 million over the next 20 years through reductions in road traffic crash and vehicle operating costs.

In addition, R3.7 million of the contract was budgeted  for emerging contractors and R2.2 million to targeted enterprises, while a total of 74 000 person days has been created to date.
