Ten Fatalities on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

On 16 and 17 January 2015, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks were held across the Western Cape. A total of 2 994 vehicles were stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services’ safety campaign.

Ten people died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 702 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 21 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Swellendam at 1.44 mg/1 000ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 5 957 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 490 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and forty five (245) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 344 050.

Highest Speeds Recorded

• 179 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
• 143 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N7 in the Vredenburg service area.

Nine Other Arrests

• 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Swellendam).
• 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Worcester).
• 1 x Excessive Speed Arrest (Swellendam).
• 1 x Reckless and Negligent Arrest (Swellendam).
• 5 x Dagga Arrest (Brackenfell).
