This weekend (9 and 10 January 2015), 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 661 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.
A total of 1 771 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 27 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 0. 97 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 14 347 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 980 speeding offences were recorded. Three hundred and eight (308) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 450 950.
