On 24 and 25 October, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 539 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.
A total of 1 586 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 39 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Swellendam at 1.35 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.
A total of 11 678 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 974 speeding offences were recorded. Two hundred and nine (209) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 283 250.
