285 Fines Issued at Weekend Roadblocks

Results of Provincial Traffic Services Weekend Traffic Operations on 11 and 12 July 2014

This weekend’s 21 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 449 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services Safety campaign.

1 073 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 28 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Caledon at 1.56 mg/1000 ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1000 ml.

849 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 108 speeding offences were recorded.

285 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R185 050.00.

The highest speed that was recorded:

• 158 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Mossel Bay service area.
• 111 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Outdshoorn service area.
• 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West service area.
• 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West service area.

Other Arrests: 9

• 3 x Reckless and negligent driving (Worcester).
• 1 x Possession of stolen trailer (Brackenfell).
• 5 x Impoundments (Vredenburg). Vehicles was escorted to Ndabeni pound Woodstock.

This weekend 12 fatalities were reported:

• 1 x Pedestrian  (Kleinvlei).
• 1 x Passenger (Lingulethu West). Cause of accident unknown.
• 1 x Driver (Woodstock). Cause of accident unknown.
• 1 x Pedestrian (Grabouw).
• 1 x Driver and 1 x passenger (Lost their lives in a collision between an ldv and ambulance on the R27 near Langebaan).
• 1 x Passenger (Vredenburg). Cause of accident unknown.
• 1 x Pedestrian (Mfuleni).
• 1 x Pedestrian (Parow).
• 1 x Driver (Philippi). Cause of accident unknown.
• 1 x Driver (60 year old male lost control over his Toyota ldv and lost his life near Citrusdal).
• 1 x Driver (Lost control over the vehicle due to heart attack near Riviersonderend).
