Results of Weekend Traffic Operations on 30 and 31 May 2014

This weekend’s 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 1 937 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services Safety Campaign.

Six hundred and ninety-three drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 16 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Knysna at 1.26 mg/1000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1000 ml.

Thirty-seven vehicles were manually screened for speeding of which 37 speeding offences were recorded.

Two hundred and four fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R148 000.00.

The highest speeds recorded were:

  • 146 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Caledon service area.
  • 94 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Eight other arrests:

  • Two Permit Arrests (Somerset West)
  • Three Impoundment Arrests (Oudtshoorn)
  • One Reckless and Negligent Driving Arrest (Somerset West)
  • One Reckless and Negligent Driving Arrest (Knysna)
  • One False Documentation Arrest (Swellendam)

This weekend nine fatalities were reported:

  • One Pedestrian (N1/Leeu Gamka/Beaufort West)
  • One Pedestrian (R300/Stock Road)
  • One Pedestrian (Phillippi East)
  • One Pedestrian (Vredendal)
  • One Passenger (Parow)
  • One Passenger (Bellville)
  • One Passenger (Citrusdal)
  • One Motorcyclist (Bellville)
  • One Driver – two vehicles involved (Klein Drakenstein Road/Paarl)
