Minister Anroux Marais welcomes new members of WC Language Committee

4 June 2018

On 9 May 2018, the Western Cape Language Committee (WCLC) welcomed three new members who will contribute to the work being done to promote the Language Act in the Western Cape.

The WCLC was established in 1998 in accordance with the Western Cape Provincial Language Act, Act No 13 of 1998. The committee consists of 11 members with the primary responsibility of advising the Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport on matters relating to language usage in the Western Cape Province, and to monitor the implementation of the Language Policy. In terms of section 12(1) of the Languages Act (Act 13 of 1998), the Language Committee meets at least four times per year, with subcommittees meeting when necessary. The new members are Jabaar Mohamed, Louis Serfontein and Fazeela Haffejee.

Minister Anroux Marais would like to congratulate the new members on their appointment. “The WCLC plays a very important role in the promotion of language in our province. When we offer citizens the right to engage in their first language, we open new channels of communication and we can ensure that we can provide fair and open opportunities to all. I wish the new members all the best and encourage them to continue the good work that the committee is doing.” she said.
