Western Cape Parliament Supports the African Peer Review Mechanism

16 July 2006
The Western Cape Provincial Parliament is in full support of the work and objectives of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to promote good governance in our province, says Western Cape Provincial Speaker Mr.Shaun Byneveldt.

Speaker Byneveldt says: "The democratic structures, such as our Provincial Parliament in its oversight function, are part of the process and we will fully co-operate. It is great to see the APRM as part of the Nepad objectives coming to visible fruition. If all goes well with our continent and country, our province will also prosper."

This is the first official handing over of the Western Cape provincial self-assessment report to the review mission under leadership of Prof. Adebayo Adedeji of Nigeria.

Speaker Byneveldt will also meet with the mission team for an individual interview on Tuesday 18 July 2006 at noon in the Provincial Parliament.

The APRM is a self-monitoring tool aimed at promoting good governance on the continent through the adoption of laws, policies and practices that will lead to political stability, economic growth, sustainable development and the continent's economic integration. This will contribute towards development and fighting poverty.
