Western Cape Government and Overstrand Municipality Open Impound Facility in Hermanus

7 June 2012

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW), in partnership with the Provincial Department of Community Safety and the Overstrand (Hermanus and surrounding areas) Municipality, opened an impound facility in the town on Friday, 8 June 2012.

The facility was opened by the Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato and the Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie. The facility was built at a cost of R1 million. According to an agreement between DTPW and the Municipality, the Department provided the funding for the construction of the facility while the Municipality built it.

There are three other impound facilities in the Western Cape. The other facilities are in Ndabeni in Cape Town, in Beaufort West and in George. The impound facility in Hermanus will service surrounding areas in towns like Swellendam and Agulhas.

The purpose of impoundment is to encourage public transport operators to operate legally in terms of a valid public transport operating licence or permit, and to adhere to the conditions of that operating licence.

DTPW aims to reduce road fatalities by 50% by 2014 and impound facilities will contribute towards achieving that target.
