Western Cape Agriculture Provides Drought Aid to Farmers

30 October 2007
Statement by Cobus Dowry, Minister of Agriculture in the Western Cape, on R20 Million Assistance to Drought Stricken Farmers.

I am pleased to announce that the Western Cape Department of Agriculture has secured R20 million from the National Department of Agriculture to come to the assistance of drought stricken farmers in the Central Karoo area.

The drought monitoring committee of the Department of Agriculture in the Western Cape is monitoring the drought situation on an ongoing basis.

We have requested assistance to the tune of R57 million, however the National Department of Agriculture after extensive consultation and negotiation has allocated R20 million at this stage.

At this stage we are preparing the necessary documentation and administrative requirements, as needed by the national Department of Agriculture and the National Treasury Department.

Further announcements with regards to the detail of the assistance to farmers will be made in due course.
