Traffic Officers Clamp Down on Drunk Driving

4 October 2009
Cape Town traffic officers are determined to rid the streets of drunk drivers. At the weekend, operating in Macassar and Somerset West, they arrested 38 motorists for driving under the influence.

In Macassar, 224 vehicles were stopped, 16 drivers were arrested for alleged drunk driving and in Somerset West, 192 vehicles were stopped and 22 motorists were arrested for this offence.

A further 140 traffic fines - mainly for vehicle defects - were issued to the value of R64 400.00.

"We cannot sufficiently emphasise that driving a vehicle while intoxicated can have fatal consequences," warns Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.

For some it becomes a seemingly sobering experience only once they've been arrested, handcuffed and put into a holding cell for the night. This is much too late!

"People need to realise and acknowledge that the City's Traffic Services Department is totally committed to and resolute about its campaign against drunken drivers," she said.
