Team Western Cape makes province proud

14 December 2022

Minister Anroux Marais wishes to congratulate Team Western Cape, who achieved a first place finish at the recently concluded National School Sport Championship Summer 2022. This is the first time in history that the Western Cape team has ended in first place in this championship, and follows on their first ever first place win at the Winter championships in July this year.

The championship took place in Pretoria from 09 December and ended with the awards ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. Team Western Cape’s contingent consisted of 248 school-going athletes, 21 managers, 43 coaches, 30 technical and other code officials and 27 support staff, as well as one doctor and nine physiotherapists. The team ended with a tally of 28 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze medals, which secured their overall first place finish.

Minister Marais said: “Our school sport teams have made history this year by winning both the Winter and Summer Championships for the first time since we started competing in these tournaments. We are incredibly proud of each athlete, coach and other officials who have worked hard to reach this achievement. You are the role-models to those who will follow in your footsteps – please keep living out your passion for sport and giving back through sharing your talents with others.”

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will continue their work in supporting the athletes and support staff who compete in these championships every year as it is clear the significant benefits that participating in sport brings to our young people. “Winning is the cherry on the top of the longer-term benefits of everyone participating in a sport of their choice”, said Minister Marais.
