11 April 2016

During his recent budget outreach, Taking the budget to the People” Western Cape Minister of Finance, Dr Ivan Meyer not only shared the implications of the 2016/17 Provincial Budget for the Theewaterskloof Municipality, but also gave them the welcome news that the Western Cape Provincial Budget has allocated R1.8m over the 2016/17 MTEF to the municipality.

Addressing the Theewaterskloof Municipality and representatives from the Agriculture, Business and Community Organisations Minister Meyer emphasised that the Western Cape  Provincial Budget was a budget for growth.

Approximately R744 million will be invested over the following three years in education, health, environment, transport and public works infrastructure projects:

·    R248 million will be spent on school infrastructure;

·    approximately R28 million makes provision for the upgrading and maintenance of existing facilities, including health technology;

·    Transport infrastructure investment of R140m aims to preserve surfaced roads, gravel roads and bridges and to prevent the accumulation of backlogs;

·    A further amount of R287.6 million has been allocated towards increasing housing opportunities and improving settlement functionality, efficiencies and resilience.

Minister Meyer highlighted that effective and efficient delivery of public infrastructure must create value through the economic and social activities it supports and promote balanced economic development, unlock economic opportunities, address socio-economic needs, promote job creation and ensure integrated human settlements and economic development

“The overarching goal of government is to achieve public value which involves greater effectiveness in tackling the problems that are most important to the citizens. Taking this citizen centric approach facilitates citizens’ access to government, improving consultation and providing a people-centred approach to service delivery”, said the Minister.

Minister Meyer concluded his visit by visiting recently completed infrastructure projects, namely, the Swartland Secondary School and the Saviva housing project.
