Scores Line Up for Chrysalis Academy Interviews

16 August 2011

Media Statement by Albert Fritz, Minister of Social Development

I have today visited the Chrysalis Academy in Tokai, where more than 200 enthusiastic applicants had one-on-one interviews to be considered for the three-month youth development programme that kicks off on 17 September this year. Volunteers from civil society groups assisted with interviews which are being conducted today and tomorrow.

Paramedics were on hand to do medical assessments, while the SAPS took fingerprints of all the candidates for vetting purposes.

Many of these young men, aged between 16 and 25, eagerly joined the queue before seven this morning, with some of them making the journey from Retreat Station to the Porter Estate in Tokai on foot. I was also encouraged by the support from so many parents. It shows a sense of commitment and dedication to helping their children achieve something in life. Some of the people I spoke to had previously thought there was no hope for their children to receive any sort of training, as many did not finish school and had no financial resources to access private training facilities.

Approximately 160 successful candidates will start a new chapter in their lives next month when they officially join the Academy. The three-month programme will focus not only on the softer life skills, but also on training like security work, catering, welding, carpentry, etc.

I want to wish them success in their new venture. This is an opportunity for them to better their lives and put them one step closer to reaching their goals. I hope they grab hold of it with both hands. To those who will not make it into the programme this time, I want to say: If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Your future is worth it.
