Sanitation for Informal Areas is Focus of City Event in Khayelitsha

22 March 2007
The City of Cape Town's first Sanitation Week event takes place at 10:00 on Monday, 26 March at the Andile Msizi Hall in Site B, Khayelitsha.

This event forms part of a month-long series of events, which started on 5 March, in support of National Water Week (19-24 March) and Sanitation Week (26-31 March). The National theme is "Water is Life" and to compliment this, the local theme for Cape Town is "Saving Water is a Way of Life."

Over the past three weeks, in excess of 7 000 learners and 370 teachers have been reached through partnerships with the Cape Town Festival, Metrorail Edutrain and the City's Youth Environmental School [YES] Programme.

The event on 26 March is a collaborative effort between the City's Water, Scientific and Health Departments. It will focus on the various types of sanitation provided to informal areas across the city.

The objective is to highlight the correct use of toilets, flushing, use of paper and the importance of basic health and hygiene around toilets. "It is important for us to have the co-operation of our informal communities in sustaining the services provided" says Zolile Basholo, Manager: Water Demand Management and Strategy. "We aim to provide the best technology, but it should be understood that each area is different, has its own unique conditions and therefore could limit the type of sanitation services that the City can provide to that area."

Other topics presented will be water quality, waterborne diseases, personal hygiene and the link between water and sanitation.

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry have invited the City to join them at the Moorreesburg Agricultural Showgrounds on Tuesday, 27 March to showcase the various types of sanitation services provided. The final event for Sanitation Week will be in Du Noon on Friday, 30 March 2007.

All Media are invited to attend.
