Ministers Fransman and Dugmore Inspect Six New Schools

13 January 2008
Transport and Public Works MEC Marius Fransman and Education MEC Cameron Dumore will inspect six newly built schools in Khayelitsha and Delft today (Monday 14 January). The schools, worth R116,7million have been built to ensure that learners have safe and secure classrooms as they start the new academic year on Wednesday.

Every year learner enrolments at schools across the province increase as a result of new learners joining the school system for the first time and those who have migrated to this province. Despite the burden of receiving thousands of new learners every year, the Western Cape has always been able to accomodate all its learners.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) expects little more than 80,000 learners in grade 1, and about 920,000 in total to return on Wednesday.

The inspection will be followed by a media briefing and refreshments at Welwitschia Primary School in Delft South, at about 11h00. The Ministers together with senior officials from the two departments will start the inspections from 09h00 at the Manyano High School in Msobomvu Drive, Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha.
